I finish maybe one in six books I try. I finished this one. Originally published in 1917, it is full of the oppressive language of the colonial era. Despite that, it is quite pleasant to read. There is the aura of authority surrounding beauty, money and knowledge. One cannot help but have a certain nostalgia for how things used to be. Still, the biggest mystery may be the real value of such stories. The language is outdated, the science is outdated, human passions stay the same.

Perhaps it is so pleasant thanks to Stefan Rudnicki.

An odd, disturbing cover. Quite eye-catching, with that train in full speed about to derail. Maybe some indirect inspiration with the first movie ever shown to the public?
