Commentary/review

Before reading this book I was frequently puzzled about China. It is possible that I understand it more now.

I was hugely impressed by the Author’s frankness and by his mature, perfect writing style, probably partly lost in translation, yet visible. It is no-nonsense to a point I was not aware was possible in literature. However, contrary to what was said in the book, I do not think it is similar to that of Hemingway’s. Yu Hua does not leave things unsaid. He rather chooses, with bravado, what to emphasize and what to boldly leave out. The book is written with huge contrasts (or big letters), yet the selection of subjects is artful and informative. I have no idea how the Author reached the level of detachment and objectivity shown in the book.

The book is written by a direct witness and participant to the folly of the Cultural Revolution. If you are repelled by it, do not read. It is, however, a masterpiece in essay writing.

China in Ten Words audiobook cover

A perfect cover to a book about communism in China, at least during the poverty era.
